Following the placement of an immediate denture, it is important to take certain measures to ensure proper healing and to avoid complications. Here are some important instructions to follow:
- Keep the Denture in Place: Do not remove the denture from your mouth for the first 24 hours after the procedure. This is to prevent swelling and bleeding, and to help with healing. Oozing of blood is normal and nothing to worry about.
- Careful Oral Hygiene: Do not rinse your mouth with anything for the first 24 hours, but continue to brush your remaining teeth gently. After 24 hours, you may rinse your mouth with a lukewarm saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of table salt dissolved in an 8 oz. glass of warm water) 3 to 4 times a day for four or five days. Take care not to strain or empty your mouth with undue force.
- Avoid Certain Actions: After the extraction, avoid spitting, smoking, or sucking on a straw. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously or drink hot or carbonated beverages. These actions can dislodge blood clots necessary for healing.
- Take Medications as Prescribed: Take all medications as prescribed, and follow the instructions carefully. Some discomfort may be expected, and pain medication may be prescribed to help relieve the discomfort.
- Manage Swelling: Swelling is common for up to one week after oral surgery, with the maximum swelling usually present on the second day. Apply an ice bag to the outside of the face for 20 minutes and then leave it off for 20 minutes. Repeat this procedure for 24 hours, and then discontinue using the ice. This will reduce discomfort, bleeding, and swelling.
- Adjust Your Diet: Soft foods are advisable for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Avoid hard or crunchy foods, and do not consume liquids through a straw. Drink as much liquid as possible, but do not go on a liquid diet. You may resume normal physical activity as tolerated 2-3 days after the procedure.
